Yama Dwar, also called Yam Dwar, is a holy place in the Ngari area of Tibet.It is known as the "Gateway of the God of Death" and is the official starting point for walking around Mount Kailash. "Yam Dwar" is a sacred, small structure located near Tarboche, near Darchen in Tibet, that is the starting point for pilgrimages to Mount Kailash. The temple is considered the portal to Lord Shiva's abode and a place of spiritual purification where pilgrims leave their worldly attachments behind.
Location: About 15-20 minutes' drive from Darchen, Tarboche is situated in Tarboche.
Spiritual Significance: It is believed that passing through here begins a spiritual journey to Shiva's abode, known as the "Gateway to Salvation."
Tarboche Flagpole: A significant flagpole is located here, which is replaced annually on the full moon day during a major ceremony.
Symbolism: This symbol represents the boundary between the earthly and divine realms, symbolizing the death of the ego and rebirth into spirituality.
Pilgrimage Route: This is the starting point for pilgrims to circumambulate Mount Kailash (Kora), a 53-kilometer journey.
Important Beliefs and Tips
No Looking Back: The Yam Dwar should not be looked at after pilgrims cross it to begin the Parikrama, according to a common belief.
Best Time to Visit: May to August are the best months for visiting because the weather is relatively pleasant.
Precautions: Taking the time to properly acclimatize before visiting the high altitude (approximately 15,500 feet) is highly recommended.
Permissions: In order to travel to Tibet, a Tibet travel permit as well as a Chinese visa are required. The site is revered by both Hindus, who view it as Yama's gate, and Tibetans (Buddhists), who honor it as a sacred site.
